I bet the first thing that popped into your head was what does installing flat panel plasma or LCD TVs have anything to do with HILTI. Today, flat panel TV’s such as plasma or LCD have become ever growingly popular and the common trend is to mount these TVs on a wall using flat panel wall mounting kits. This is not an uncommon practice since these TV’s are very light and can easily be hung up on any wall, except when the wall is made out of concrete. Another problem is for those installing their flat panel TVs onto the brick of a fireplace.
My first advice when mounting such a TV in your home is to drill the holes through the mortar and NOT the brick. It is easier to cover up any mortar scars than it is to cover up brick. Another reason to mount it into the mortar is because most bricks are hollow or have air pockets in them. It is a good idea to check the age/state of the bricks and mortar. With respect to the bricks themselves, are they shaved bricks or full bricks?
Finally when you decide to go through with the installation, you must decide whether to use tapcon screws, expanding sleeve inserts, chemical anchors such as the Hilti brand I usually use but only available to contractors, or just go with brute force and use a Hilti gun to pound it through the mortar. I am not going to make a recommendation in this article because there are too many variables to consider, though the installation itself is not impossible.
Finally, ensure that there is enough mantle to shield the heat of the fireplace from your TV. Happy mounting and good luck.
